For those looking to explore beyond the resort, Alor Island has much to offer. Embark on cultural tours to visit traditional villages and witness traditional ceremonies. Take a trek through lush rainforests and discover stunning landscapes, waterfalls, hot springs and island hopping.

CULTURAL TRIP

Alor (east of Flores, 30 kilometers north of Timor) is an island that lies east of Bali and Flores in East Nusa Tenggara. Home to the Alorse, it is 2,884.5 square miles in area and is very mountainous, with limited coastal lowlands. It was a Portuguese holding until 1854 when it was handed over to the Dutch.

Alor is one of the world’s most ethnically diverse places. On the island there are 140,000 people divided among 50 tribes spread in 7 inhabited islands, each of which speaks a distinct languages or dialects that fall into seven distinct language groups. Some groups practiced head headhunting up until the 1950s. They used arrows tipped with chicken bones that splintered inside the body, producing a very nasty wound. Occasionally, it tribal warfare still breaks out between different groups.

The unique culture of the Alorese are best observed among the Takpala indigenous group who dwell in the village of Lembur Barat, North-Central Alor. The Takpala still preserve the traditional housing construction that resembles a pyramid, covered with coconut leaves, bamboo plaited walls, and four main wooden pillars.

The island of Alor is also known as the island of a Thousand Moko’s. Moko is a small bronze kettledrum, which is believed to have originated from the Dong Son culture of Vietnam. However, it remains a mystery as to how these prehistoric Dong Son drums arrived in Alor. Local legend says that the moko’s were discovered buried in the ground, and indeed until today it is still common for these mokos to be similarly uncovered. To observe these unique artifacts, one can visit the Museum of A Thousand Mokos located in the main town of Kalabahi, on Alor Island. The Museum also showcases a collection of distinct Alor hand-woven clothing called Kawate.

Tuti Adagae Hotspring

One thing that our guest should know is that Alor Regency offers more than beautiful beaches. For example, there is a recommended hot spring to visit called Tuti Adagae. The location is in Air Mancur Village and it is the part of Northeast Alor Sub-District. It is a little bit surprising, though. The fact is Alor Island has no volcano at all. So, the existence of such hot spring is considered an amazing phenomenon! This explains why most tourists won’t miss the chance to visit the site and do several fun activities there including photography and exploration. The only thing to consider is the route, which is considered challenging and difficult.

Mataru Waterfall

The first impressive thing about Mataru Waterfall is definitely its size. In terms of appearance, it is somewhat similar to that of 6-levels Mainang Waterfall.

A trip to Mataru Waterfall indeed involves both a local transportation service and a short trekking. From Kalabahi City, tourists may undergo several hours to get to Legiman Village. Once arriving at the local settlement, they may spend about several minutes of walking. Have no worries. The landscape is nice and it even features various trees and shady bushes. Thus, the trekking activity would be both comfortable and fun for everyone (especially nature lovers).

Mount Sirung Volcano

Here is basic information regarding Sirung Mountain. It is considered an active volcano and resides on Pantar Island. The height is only 862 meters above the sea level, so it is considered a short volcano. Due to the volcanic activity, the mountain emits solfatara smoke. No wonder, it becomes one of the best views, which tourists are able to watch while trekking. As long as they come during a good weather, they might be able to witness such natural phenomenon easily. As for the appearance, the mountain features many rocky hills with a dry surface. Even the crater looks so majestic from up there.
